okkkkkay so i know that i haven't updated in a long time blah blah blah but i got sick and then we got craploads of work, and then i was just lazy :D. i figured that i should at least get this entry out of the way before i leave for japan (which is this friday, by the way) so it's going to be longer than the one before it C:. let's begin!! Xian and the Terracotta Warriors i refuse to post all of the pictures here so i will let you mosey on over to my Flickr to see them :D Xian is where the Terra Cotta warriors are. So, being in China, we had to go and see them. The train there was fine. Long, but fine. My immediate impression of Xian was that it was .... smoggy. Worse than Beijing ever is! You couldn't even see the sun. The hostel we stayed in was lovely. There was a cat and dog there; I don't remember the cat's name but the dog was named Taro. The bad started when they told us that we would be having to stay an extra night in Xian because they couldn't get us train tickets back to Beijing. It wasn't unexpected, just annoying. Saturday we went exploring, got lost, came back, ate some awesome food, got drunk in the bar, played some pool, got sick from drinking too much. Typical. (Never drink with English boys. They will drink you under the table, guaranteed.) Sunday we went to see the Terra Cotta warriors. Fucking amazing. If i ever come back to Xian that's the only thing I'm coming back for. It was lovely out in the countryside. Clear and beautiful and warm but not awful. The warriors were everything that we wanted them to be. Monday ... oh monday. Monday we went to the bell tower. Nice. Got some McD's. Lounged. Got our tickets. Ate some lunch. Played some DS. Then took the bus to the train station. Got some more McD's for dinner. The train station was ... HORRIBLE. filled with dirty, smelly, lecherous old uncles watching us. It was only me and four other girls, because we wanted to go ahead, and only one of us spoke fluent Chinese. The men all over proceeded to stare and point and all kinds of things, until we were in line and Karen (who speaks the Chinese) said to some of them (in chinese) "You know, we understand everything that you're saying." it's not true that we all do, only she does, but they stopped staring. the train back to Beijing was ridiculous. The couple that were sharing the room with us weren't bad at all, but there was no door on our compartment ... and the toilets were not only squatty but FILTHY and SMELLY and UNCLEAN. (for those of you that don't know, i've had a lot of knee surgeries so using squat toilets for me is near impossible, because my knees don't bend.) I was so happy to get back to Beijing, mostly because we were all unable to shower for three days, and we looked like it. needless to say, i didn't like Xian and will not go back unless I am under extreme duress. but i like the warriors. without further ado - pictures. ![]() us at the hostel. ![]() BEST. It was epic. Again, I'm not going to post all of the photos because there's over 50, but I'll post the best :D We went during golden week and it was packed but it was fun anyway. I bought a panda hat. it is awesome. it is a furry panda head. ![]() hahahaha emergent exit. ![]() Panda! ![]() Panda! ![]() so i will concede that i have lost weight. and the panda is sniffing me. ![]() they have chickens in the zoo. ![]() as well as raccoons. hahaha. no one here believes that we have them all over and that we hate them. ![]() sleeping fox awwwwww. ![]() YAKYAKYAKYAKYAKYAKYAK. i love yaks. ![]() CAMEL!!!! ![]() Birds of prey. ![]() Another bird of prey. ![]() anddddd the obligatory giraffe. the ride back from the zoo was ... interesting. i got stuck between people on the bus because it was PACKED FULL and when i got off at the stop i literally BODY CHECKED EVERYONE to get out and then i gazelle lept off the bus to get to my friends. it was epic. i have never been touched by so many people at one time that it was so freaky. at least now i'll be able to ride the buses in chicago ... they're nothing to the ones in beijing!! Okay i also have a foodie entry that goes here but i decided since you'll never go to china that you don't want to read my restaurant review. so skipping that. check out the pictures at flickr if you want <3. mongolian food, pizza hole, and jiaozi this is technically also a foodie thing but uh it's also cultural and this was our last week here so you have to look at our delicious food C: -likes to torture people- firstttt bri took us to this kick ass mongolian place to eat (shock! we hadn't been drinking yet, so i was surprised to go, because of the last 'adventure food' episode, which i will detail at the end, because it has no pictures C:) ![]() bri (blonde) and sam l. ![]() sam d. + noodle :D ![]() MUTTON EFFING TACOS. just like mexican food but in china! ![]() annnnnnd they're gone. nomnomnom. ![]() sam and bri quite happy and content post-nom. ![]() sam and i quite content post-nom. then we went to pizza hole last time :D This is what happened the first time we went to pizza hole: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() just so you know we're allowed to write on ANYTHING in Pizza hole. anything. fantastic!! so, when we went back ... ![]() banana whip. ![]() chocolate whip. ![]() seasoned fries. ![]() chicken strip pizza. nomnomnom. then, teacher jiang took us out for jiaozi (steamed dumplings). i love him, i'm going to miss him <3. ![]() cold noodle-cabbage-meat thing. ![]() gyoza! ![]() inside the delicious gyoza. ![]() some kind of steamed veggie. if green had a flavor, that would have been it. ![]() ohhhh delicious jiaozi. peking opera okay so to the peking opera! go wiki it if you don't know what it is, i don't feel like explaining it. i do have some videos for you - click the links! Video one - Peking Opera: Jade Bracelet Video two - Peking Opera: Old man and the Nun Video three - Stealing Herb fight So yeah, pictures. ![]() aren't i pretty? ![]() the hotel where the theater is. ![]() Peking Opera masks. ![]() HAHAHAHA. ![]() HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. ![]() The band that played all the music. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() some of the costumes. ![]() (christ do i have enough images in this entry?) anyway. now on to that 'adventure food' story. so we were drinking in the hallway of the hotel (and before ya'll get up in arms about that there's no drinking age in china, you can drink whenever you want. it's the shopkeeper's discretion) and i think between those of us that had been drinking we had finished a bottle of captain and apple stoli and some (not me) were working on the second bottle of el captain. but we were hungry, and because we were a little buzzed we wanted food. it was like 10 at night so pretty much everything in beijing is still open. some places don't close until 3 am to open at 10 am again. so we went food hunting and happened upon this little restaurant that had a bunch of people in it, so we decided 'if in rome ...' and we went in and they didn't have english menus D: so we did the 'look and point' where if it looks like something you know you eat it. so we got noodles and pickles and beef (or lamb, couldn't tell) and what looked like beef in stew with peppers. everything was fine until we looked at the 'beef' after eating some of it with the peppers. it tasted unlike beef. then we noticed it was hollow. and wavy. and then THEN bri looks at it and says: "i think it's intestine." THANKS FOR TELLING US AFTER WE'VE EATEN HALF OF IT MANNNNN. so needless to say we went back to the dorm and spewed for the rest of the night/day after because we had just eaten CHITLINS. yum. i personally think it also had something to do with the unusual amount of alcohol we consumed but meh, no one listens to me. (someone just galloped drunkenly down the hallway. we're making the best of china before we leave. i refuse to drink myself into a stupor just because i can't drink in japan, kthnx.) uhhhh we leave on friday. for japan. SO EFFING EXCITED. will update before leaving, and hopefully quickly after arriving. Labels: china, food, opera, terracotta warriors, xian, zoo

Should this life sometime deceive you,Don't be sad or mad at it! On a gloomy day, submit: Trust - fair day will come, why grieve you? Heart lives in the future, so What if gloom pervade the present? All is fleeting, all will go; What is gone will then be pleasant. Если жизнь тебя обманет, Не печалься, не сердись! В день уныния смирись: День веселья, верь, настанет. Сердце в будущем живет; Настоящее уныло: Все мгновенно, все пройдет; Что пройдет, то будет мило. Pushkin. how to ...
